Tower House Whitwick, Leicestershire

Constructed between 1901-1920, Tower House is a large family home and equestrian facility located on the outskirts of Whitwick, Leicestershire. Originally consisting of the main house, garages and stables, the Client wanted to investigate the possibility of redeveloping the existing garages into an annex for the eldest daughter and constructing a new garage and home office facility.

JMP Architecture, with the Client, developed a scheme which provided on the footprint of the existing garages a two-bedroom annex and a three-car garage with home office facility connected to the main house.

The annex took on design cue’s from the previous garage and main house. A dedicated driveway and parking area were formed on the north side of the property, giving a degree of privacy from the main house. A porch was added to the north elevation giving a sense of arrival, with a hall and stair leading to the first floor. The two bedrooms and bathroom could be found on the ground floor, with an open plan kitchen / dining / lounge at first, maximising the views across the paddocks.

The garage and home office were proposed as an extension to the main house, allowing ease of access to and from both the garage and office. The form, intended to respond to the main house, while remaining subservient to it. The garage reproduced the facility to house three cars and responded to the brief of allowing the Client to park and access the house directly through a link hallway. Off this hallway a stair to the first floor was proposed, where the home office could be found. A further link to the main house was also proposed on the first floor.
